Dr. Logo.

Geschiedenis

Het is al een tijdje geleden - in 1976, bijna geschiedenis - dat Gary Kildall Digital Research oprichtte, CP/M  een besturingssyteem voor microcomputers uitvond en daarna ook nog Dr. Logo schreef.

    Augustus 1983 - Digital Research Introduceert Dr. Logo voor de IBM PC
    Mei 1984         - Digital Research Introduceert Dr. Logo voor de IBM PCjr
    Juli 1984         - Digital Research Introduceert Dr. Logo voor 8-bit CP/M

- DR (of DRI) is de afkorting voor Digital Research, Incorporated.
- CP/M is de afkorting voor Control Program for Microcomputers.

Uit zijn manuscript:

    A new alternative had appeared on the scene, a computer language called Logo.
    I wrote Digital Research Logo, or Dr. Logo, as it came to be called.
    Logo taught kids how to think about solving complex problems.

ROCHE> Dr.  Logo  was first available for the IBM PC,  then  the  Atari 520ST, then the ACT Apricot F1e, then the NEC APC-III, then  the Amstrad  8-bit CP/M Plus computers: CPC-6128 and  PCW-8256,  which were  best-sellers (more than 1,250,000 PCWs sold!).

there are (at least) 3 versions of Dr. logo:

1) the original, copy-protected for the IBM PC (8086)
2) the one for the Atari 520ST (68000)
3) the two for the Amstrad 8-bits microcomputers (8080)

(and, apparently, another CP/M-86 version for the ACT Apricot F1)

(And the one for MS-DOS, but it runs only on a NEC APC-III.)

Beschikbare Dr. Logo versies:

1) ACT Apricot F1 (zip) of diskimage (.dsk)
2) VGALOGO v0.9, een Apricot F1 versie voor VGA
3) 5271LOGO v0.9, ook VGA geschikt, maar voor de IBM 3270 PC.
4) Dr. Logo, een versie die kleine letters accepteert als invoer.  Emmanuel Roche heeft geprobeerd deze versie te laten werken zoals gedocumenteerd in Section 6 van de Dr. Logo Reference Manual.
5) Amstrad PCW / CPC, zie cpcwiki.
6) AtariST Logo - Dr. Logo voor GEM.
7) Dr. Logo voor Tiki-100.

Up and running Dr. Logo.

Vgalogo (nr. 2) en DrLogo (nr. 4) worden 'gerund' met behulp van CPM86.EXE, een CPM emulator. Het commando - op de commandline - is als volgt:
CPM86 VGALOGO.CMD of CPM86 DRLOGO.CMD en werkt alleen (in Win9*/DOS) met behulp van een diskette of een ramdrive. In WinXP gaat alles normaal.

De andere versies (nr. 1, 5, 6 en 7) al dan niet met een emulator.

A Personal History of Dr. Logo

POWER> What  follows  are recollections of my contributions to the creation  of  Dr. Logo, about 25 years ago. These are in answer to questions posed by Mr. Roche. I won't guarantee their absolute verity - memory is always the second thing to go  - but they should be mostly accurate. Though most of  these  recollections focus  on me, Dr. Logo was the product of several programmers,  tech  writers, artists,  salespeople  and  managers,  all of  whom  worked  hard  to  produce something we could all be proud of.

Powerpak, a package full of Dr. Logo files, all written by Joseph Power and put together by Mr. Roche who also made and added the pictures.

Dr. Logo en plaatjes / images.

De plaatjes hierboven zijn gemaakt in Dr. Logo en vervolgens met de PrintScreen knop in een tekenprogramma geladen, daarna omgezet naar een .gif bestand.

Dr. Logo images zijn een .pic bestand -  weggeschreven als pc0 en pc1, maar verschillende versies betekent verschillende .pic formaten. Zo schreef John Elliott:

ELLIOT> The problem is that the format output by DrLogo was different on each  computer to which DR Logo was ported; but it always used the same .PIC  extension. On the Amstrad PCW, for instance, .PIC is a 128-byte header followed by 23040 bytes of data (256 lines of 90 bytes each).

LOADPIC	LOADPIC will load a picture (.PIC) file as saved by DR.LOGO, or a .SPC file as saved by Stop Press.  LOADPIC will run on an Amstrad PCW or a Spectrum +3.
Graph.arc	Utilities to print Stop Press and DR Logo graphics on any printer (including daisywheel) and to view/print PLOT33 files using GSX. [PCW]
PIC viewers	DOS-based image viewers for the PC0 / PC1 files produced by the version of Digital Research LOGO that John Elliott patched for VGA support.
